All About Carson
Nestled in the valley once occupied by Carson Field is the heart of the east Newark Community, Carson Elementary. In the early 1950’s Jenny Carson sold the land where Carson Elementary now sits to Newark City Schools for the price of just one dollar. The land was then named Carson Field and held many sporting events and family gatherings until August 2007 when the official groundbreaking ceremony was held for Carson Elementary.
Carson Elementary is a K through 5th grade building that houses up to 500 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. We are proud to share that 100% of our staff is also Highly Qualified through the State of Ohio.
Character Education
The Six Pillars of Character are our core approach to discipline. Character Education and modeling of respect, responsibility, caring, citizenship, trustworthiness, and fairness is a proactive rather than reactive approach to discipline. Every student is supported and rewarded for demonstration of Appropriate Behavior, Academic Success, and Service Learning activities. Each student tracks their own behavior. A four color system from Quality Tools is used and data charts are kept and communicated by each individual student and teachers to their families.
Intervention
Our intervention starts at the classroom level. Over the past few years our staff has been provided professional development in the area of Response to Intervention (RTI). The Tier I interventions are delivered at the classroom level. The next, more intensive intervention is Tier II. The district has invested in Tier II Research Based Reading Interventions to address the reading needs of our struggling students. These interventions are delivered by folks trained in the specific area of intervention.
Our students who fall under the criteria of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) have specialized teachers. IEP students have a team of 4 full time Intervention Specialists, 1 Speech and Language Therapist, a part time Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, Vision Therapist, and Adaptive Physical Education Teacher who provide instruction in an inclusion and resource room setting depending on the needs of the student.
Volunteers
Volunteers are in intricate part of the Carson Elementary experience. The Carson School Community consists of volunteers in our PTO, America Reads students from Denison, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. In addition we partner with several universities in the area who send young teaching education students and student teachers. Ashland, OSU, Mount Vernon Nazarene send us their students for mutual learning opportunities.
